Project Petal ~ Outer Circle Part 5 ~ Landshut to Mühldorf

 27-May-2026

This next part will take me through the hills of THE BORDER, past my grandma's house, and then over to Mühldorf, which is also the easternmost point I've reached with these rides of mine.

First, I need to get out to my starting point of Landshut by train. That is made more difficult by the fact that the railway is literally out.

Fortunately, the trains still run starting from Feldmoching, which is 45 minutes away by bike, but hey, I was planning on doing a cycling day anyway, so...

I manage to get to Landshut by S-Bahn and regional train, and then I'm off, making my way through the city predominately through parks, and crossing over first the little Pfettrach, and then the significantly larger Isar, before cycling up a side valley to at least stagger the inevitable ascent out of the Isar valley over a longer distance, and thus a somewhat more manageable gradient.

And then I'm out on the countryside again, cycling across hills and past fields...

...until I reach the village of Ruprechtsberg where my grandmother lives in a big house on the hillside.

There's a bird nest in her garage where a trio of little bird chicks are hungrily waiting to be fed, sitting in a nest that was built on the side of a ladder hung on the wall.

My grandma is happy to see me and cooks me the most lavish lunch I had on any of these tours. After that, she almost doesn't want to let me go. But I know I still have a long way ahead of me, so I excuse myself and continue cycling across the hills towards Mühldorf.

Along the way I come across the spring of the Rott. Unfortunately, aside from a billboard there's really not much to be seen here.

So I continue across the hills, an eventually enter the county of Mühldorf.

And here's a picture for those of you who want to see me in Irl.

Moving on, I make my way through some woods, past a cute little chapel, and across the last of the hills.

Once I'm down in the Inn valley - where Mühldorf is located - I come across some gay mossy meadows.

And then it's across the flat meadows of the valley until I reach the river Isen. This river is going to merge with the mighty Inn a few more kilometers downstream.

From there, it's only a short way until I reach Mühldorf. Since I only make my way to the train station today, I should not actually cross the nearby Inn, only a little artificial side channel fueling a hydroelectric power plant a bit further downstream.

And then I'm at the station! From here, I take the time-honored 150-year-old train line back to Munich.

Or at least I WOULD, if only that one was not presently under construction too! Seriously, are they trying to isolate Munich right now? As it is, I only have the choices between going back to Landshut or onward to Rosenheim, both of which are huge detours.

I decide to take the one over Landshut, and of course you know what that means...

That's right! I get to get off at Feldmoching again, and ride for another 45 minutes into the sunset!

By the time I arrive back home, it's almost 21:00. The sun has already set, but at least it's still light outside around this time of the year.

What an odyssey of a ride! I was out of the house for almost 14 hours, and of that time I spent:

  • 6 hours on the actual bike ride
  • 4 hours on trains
  • 1.5 hours cycling to the train station and back again
  • 1.5 hours visiting my grandma
  • 1 hour waiting for trains

Especially with the "trains not running from Mühldorf"-fail, I could have just cycled back all the way from my Grandma's place and still would have arrived back at the Fox Loft earlier.

Here's hoping the next ride will go a bit smoother. I definitely won't continue this project before the trains to Mühldorf are running again.
